Aims and objectives
The module aims to:
promote an understanding of the nature and role of museums and collections in Western society through an examination of their origins and subsequent developments.
introduce students to the theoretical background of current critical debate about museums, collections and collecting.
focus on the particular role of the museum object in the material culture in Western society.
By the end of the module the student will possess:
a sure handling of the analytical terms and critical concepts relating to issues arising from the collection and interpretation of objects/artefacts in museums and galleries.
