Based on personal and set projects, this module further extends AR20520 for those students who have now decided to continue with printmaking. Individual tutorials and group seminars discuss both the students' work and work selected from the School's Print Collection. There is a greater emphasis on the selection of printmaking processes.
The aim of the module is to build upon the experience already gained by the students who have completed Printmaking 1 & 2.
Students are encouraged to research and develop subject matter that is of specific interest to them resulting in imagery that is appropriate for relief printing and collograph. Wherever possible students are encouraged to become more experimental in their approach and to investigate the potential for mixed media prints.
The aims of the module are thus:
To further student’s technical competence and understanding of various print media, building on the skills learned in one or more areas covered by Printmaking 1&2
To develop a more experimental approach to printmaking using processes previously learned and introducing collograph and relief printing.
To address the issue of ‘personal statement’ through self-directed projects, to engage with a subject matter meaningful to the students in terms of their interests and experience.
Engage with a chosen subject matter for a sustained period of time.
Promote a self-directed mode of study.
Develop the student’s ability to discuss and evaluate their own work and that of their peers.
Work towards a series of interrelated prints.
By the completion of the module the students should be able to:
Experiment in a wide range of print media and explore possibilities of printmaking as a means to extend the artist’s technical vocabulary.
Be technically proficient in relief printing, collograph and mixed media.
Be self-motivated and evaluate their achievements thoughtfully.
Produce work within a conceptual framework and be able to articulate their ideas in a reasoned and critical manner.
Consider the relationship between their work and that of past printmakers and assess its relevance to contemporary printmaking practice.
