Brief description
The curriculum for Photography 3 plus: individual and group projects deal with various approaches to subject matter through technical and aesthetic analysis. An examination is also made of professional photography from examples in the School of Art Collection of photographs. This module is intended for those students who wish to practice and study photography as a main option in their degree scheme. There is also an introduction to colour photography and colour processing.
Aims:
-
introduce the student to a greater practical knowledge of technique.
-
encourage the student to develop an independent critical approach to his/her own work.
-
encourage and inform the student so that they will be able to approach and analyse the photographic work of other photographers.
-
promote a group ethic of support and critique so that although the student develops as an individual his/her development inevitably enhances the team as a whole.
-
identify a theme and subject matter and provide reasons for the choice.
-
define possible approaches in the initial stages.
-
define a relationship with past work, other photographers work and the general sphere of creative visual art.
-
develop an awareness of how individual photographs work within a series of interrelated images.
-
compile a portfolio of images on a theme which work as a series giving consideration to : -
a) initial photography
b) individual images in their own right including print quality
c) editing
d) sequencing and order of images
e) narrative, where appropriate
f) mounting and presentation of portfolio
Objectives:
-
Produce a portfolio of prints with the following considerations in mind:
-
They should be of one theme or subject.
-
They must be designed to form a sequence.
-
Each image should be interesting enough to work on its own.
-
The theme should be self-motivated. It may be related to their other art practice work or to work they have completed in the last semester.
Include the following for the submission of their final series:
-
Evidence demonstrating how they arrived at their sequence i.e. the different approaches experimented with to arrive at the final result. In light of this the student should work with a local or self-constructed subject for regular photo-sessions.
-
The student should include at least 7 different contact sheets and sample test prints in support of their series.
-
A short statement should be included with their portfolio relating to your sequence.
This additional project is concerned with adopting and adapting more techniques for art practice work. There is a list of suggestions below but other agreed techniques may be investigated.
