General description

Electronic commerce is largely concerned with re-engineering business processes so that they are carried out over the Internet. In order to design and implement the necessary software, it is essential to understand the nature of these processes and the way in which the data derived from them contributes to the management of the organization and to the preparation of its financial accounts. This module addresses this requirement.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:

Classify data relating to particular transactions and incorporate into the appropriate financial statements;
Justify the particular treatment that may be accorded to particular transactions or groups of transactions for the range of possible alternatives in preparing financial statements and assess the consequences of each type of treatment;
Design audit provisions appropriate to specific business processes;
Demonstrate an understanding of the assumptions underlying the preparation of financial statements and of the limitations of current financial reporting practices;
Assess the financial strength of a company on the basis of its financial statements.
