An analysis, emphasising theatricality and theatrical tradition, of key works by the major dramatists of the period.
Lectures will be given on unstarred texts only. Continuous assessment will be set on the starred texts only, which will not be lectured on. There will be seminars on all texts. Examination questions will be set on all texts.
As outcomes of their studies, students will have acquired a knowledge of the changes in conventions from Baroque to Classicism in French 17th-century drama, and be acquainted with the greatest dramatists in these two fields. They will also be more deeply aware, after close textual study, of the resources of language, and of some of the ways in which it can be manipulated.
