Aims of the module


The aim of this module is to trace the evolution of the world system between the end of the Second World War in 1945 and the Vietnam War in 1968.

Objectives


At the end of this module you should be able to:


- explain the rise of the USA and USSR to international pre-eminence.
- understand the different theories of the post-war international system.
- compare and contrast the impact of the Cold War in Western Europe and Asia.
- explain the rise of the Third World.
- discuss the origins and consequences of the arms race.
- understand the political economy of the Cold War.
- describe the main changes in international communism after 1953.
- explain the origins and outcome of the United States intervention in Vietnam.
- evaluate the main changes in the structure of the world order between the end of World War 2 and the Vietnam War.
