Syllabus / Curriculum design


The module commences with an historical overview of British planning. The planning system lectures and practicals are divided into examining planning policy guidance notes, development plans, development control, planning tools, public participation and sustainability. Practicals and field visits allow students to familiarise themselves with planning documentation, proposals and public enquiries.

Aims of the module


The module aims to provide students with an understanding of the operation of the British planning system, identifying the strengths and weaknesses of procedures, legislation and tools.

Learning outcomes


On completion of this module, students will be able to:


i) identify and analyse the structure and operation of the British planning system


ii) identify and apply planning tools to specific land use proposals


iii) assess the ability of the public to participate in and influence the planning process


iv) evaluate the effectiveness of the planning system in controlling and promoting development
