Brief description

This module will use the French example as the basis for discussion of a number of themes including the causes and impact of industrialisation and of changes in the agricultural economy. It will provide an opportunity for the discussion of such topics as the effects of political upheaval and war, the significance of the survival of a large agricultural sector, of relatively early demographic transition, of variation in growth rates both over time and between regions, and of the significance of the transport 'revolution' - in comparison with, for example Britain. Indeed France provides a very different model of change from that of Britain, so often taken as a paradigm, and the course will offer the opportunity for a comparative approach. Amongst the methodological problems raised will be those of measurement and the assessment of the impact of economic change on social structures, the distribution of wealth, living standards and state-society relationships.
