Brief description

Students will encounter improvisation, voice- and movement-work, workshop exercises, and exercises in the interpretation of dramatic texts. They will then work in rehearsals with a director towards a low-budget production. Each student will record and analyse their production process in a learning journal.

Recommended background reading is provided. A list of selected texts for performance will be distributed at the beginning of the academic year.

The aims of the module are

To introduce some key concepts in rehearsal methodology and to apply and test these in a production environment
To provide students with the experience of undertaking a practical investigation into creating and articulating a theatrical narrative, based on a dramatic or non-dramatic text
To encourage students to take responsibility for collaboration and group work within the context of rehearsals, workshops and production
To enable students to analyse and theorize their own experience of the production process

Upon completion of this module, students should be able:

to work as a member of a team in the contexts of performance and production;
to understand the problems, possibilities and challenges of interpreting text for performance;
to understand the principles of dramatic narrative
to reflect analytically upon the production process
