Learning outcomes

On completion of this module students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the environmental impacts of :-

energy production and use

nuclear power and nuclear waste reprocessing and disposal

heavy metals in the environment

atmospheric pollution

fuels for transport, alternative energy sources

organic chemicals in the environment

Brief description

The module considers aspects of environmental pollution from a chemical standpoint. Lecture topics include:

the effects of energy production and use;
nuclear power and nuclear waste reprocessing and disposal;
heavy metals in the environment;
atmospheric pollution (acid rain, photochemical smog, the depletion of the ozone layer);
fuels for transport, alternative energy sources - wind, solar, wave, tide, geothermal and biomass;
organic chemicals in the environment which consists of three parts - dioxine, endochrine disruptors and pesticide.

Aims

To gain a knowledge and understanding of different types of environmental pollution and methods of control.
