Syllabus

Introduction: terminology, economic approaches to development, social and other non-economic assessments of development, indicators of development.
Theories of development: models of growth, structural change and dependence.
Population and development: Malthusian and household population models.
International trade and development: international perspectives on rural development, trade theory, trade policy, commodity policy.
Governments, markets and institutions: development planning, structural adjustment programmes, role of IMF and World Bank.
Agriculture and rural development: role of the agricultural sector in economic development, agricultural transformation, rural strategies and progress, rural-urban migration.
The environment and development: environmental impacts of development, sustainable development, policy options.
