On completion of this module, students should be able to:
a) Demonstrate familiarity with a wide range of archaeological material ranging in date from the Mesolithic to the High Medieval period in a Welsh context.
b) Demonstrate familiarity with comparative perspectives on the prehistory/history of two discrete areas of mid-Wales.
c) Demonstrate an understanding of a range of approaches to the study of sites, monuments and artefacts in the British landscape.
d) Recognise, analyse and reflect critically on the distribution of primary archaeological material.
e) Develop the ability to evaluate strengths and weaknesses of particular archaeological/historical arguments and where necessary challenge them.
f) Gather, sift and critically assess both primary and secondary source materials
g) Work both independently and collaboratively and to participate in group discussion
h) Experience using a variety of records, including those held in the offices of the RCAHM (Wales) and the Clwyd-Powys Archaeological Trust.
i) Acquire experience in the principles of specialist skills required to discover and investigate different types of archaeological sites and monuments
The module is designed to introduce students to the diversity of and the interpretation placed upon archaeologial/historical monuments. The emphasis will be upon the recognition, analysis and historical interpretation of the man-made environment. Wherever possible students will have an opportunity to experience a hands-on approach making use of computer-generated data.
