On completion of this module, students will be able to:
1. Describe the main objectives of the development of tourism enterprises
2. Identify sources of funding available to operators of tourism enterprises.
3. Explain how tourist enterprises market their products and services.
4. Identify the constraints affecting tourism providers.
5. Assess the opportunities offered to tourism enterprises
6. Describe the negative and positive impacts that tourism can have on a region
This module integrates the core tourism subjects of the first year. It will give students the opportunity to examine tourism enterprises at first hand and learn about the impacts of tourism in the area.
A STUDY TOUR, FOR WHICH THERE WILL BE A COST TO STUDENTS, IS INCLUDED IN THIS MODULE.
This is a student-centred module involving a field course and/or series of visits to examine the management and operation of a series of tourism enteprises in a region. It will provide students with an opportunity to investigate the development of a variety of tourism enterprises; identify the constraints and opportunities for tourism enterprises; describe the economic, socio-cultural and environmental impacts of tourism in a defined region, and identify the challenges facing tourism enterprises in the future.
Students will prepare field reports on the enteprises visited, highlighting strengths and weaknesses.
.1 Independent project work
Students are required to collect material for, and complete, field reports on tourism enterprises for their assessment, thereby contributing to the development of their independent project work skills.
.2 IT and information handling
The field reports will be word processed and will include graphical data on the scope and scale of tourism in the selected enterprises and region.
In completing the necessary research for their assessments, students will be expected to manage their own time and plan the effective use of learning resources.
