Aims

The module considers various managerial strategies to achieve control and the interaction between control and motivation, with the focus primarily at the level of the work group. The attempt to define a science of organisations in order to assist management gave rise to various schools of thought through the 20th century; and to help the students secure some sort of grip on the extensive jargon and conceptual apparatus of Organisation Theory, a mainly chronological approach is utilised. The inter-connectedness of the various topics is also emphasised.

Brief description

This module provides an introduction to the main building blocks of organisation theory.

Content

Beginning with bureaucracy, the module considers themes of motivation and organisational culture, concluding with leadership theories.
