Modules and Units in Computer Science

This session (1994-5) sees the introduction of modularisation into Part II. Students entering their second year do so under modularisation, whereas students entering their third year are still under the unit scheme.

The word 'module' refers to courses offered under modularisation. The words 'unit' and 'half unit' refer to courses offered under the units scheme. These are only available to final year students. Students entering their second year will not be able to take third year units.

Module identifiers are of the form ``CS21020'', where the third character indicates the `level' (which corresponds to the year in which the module is usually taken), and the last two characters indicate the `credit weighting' of the module. So, CS21020 is a level 2 module worth 20 credits.

There are no third year full units. Courses with the suffix `(h)' are half units, and C390(+) counts as one and a half units.

Students entering their third year this session may take some modules, subject to the rules set out below. In this case, a 20 credit module will correspond to a full unit, and a 10 credit module to a half unit. However, level 1 and level 2 modules will not count as starred units (see under individual degree scheme descriptions).

The Computer Science department will consider appropriate units from the Mathematics department or the Department of Information and Library Studies to be Computer Science units for the purposes of degree naming, so long as the total scheme remains a sensible one. Consult the departmental advisor if you need to know more.

To ensure best use of resources, the department reserves the right to withdraw modules and units, or otherwise amend the information given here.

A series of departmental seminars will be held during the year with invited speakers from industry, and this and other universities. The material in these seminars is regarded as examinable and questions involving knowledge of this material may be set on appropriate final year papers.

Students should note that an honours degree will not be awarded to candidates whose work on C390(+) (the major project) does not reach honours standard.

BCS Exemption

Candidates for single honours BSc in Computer Science should note that, provided they achieve honours standard, they will be exempted from both parts of the British Computer Society's examinations and so will have fulfilled all the educational requirements for corporate membership of the Society and for Chartered Engineer status. Candidates who are successful in gaining a joint honours degree in Computer Science will be exempted from Part 1 of the Society's examinations.

Similar exemption has been provisionally granted for the engineering degrees (BEng and MEng) and for Computer Science with a European Language; this is due to be confirmed when the first students graduate.

Direct Entry to Part II

For direct entrants to Part II, a specially designed lead-in course is run during September. This is compulsory for all such students. Successful completion of this course is an ``exemption in Computer Science at Level 1''.
