Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

* Describe the nature of archives and the pattern of archive keeping in the UK.

* Outline the main provisions of professional archival standards and guidelines.

Identify and explain best practice in repository and collection management, public service delivery, and access.

*Explain the principles of provenance and archival integrity, and be aware of standards for archival description.

*Discuss the impact of IT and the internet on archives and be able to locate a range of archival sources.

* Outline developments in professional infrastructure, including cross-sectoral and regional working.

Brief description

The module will provide students with an understanding of the nature of archival material and a broad introduction to the management of archives; the emphasis is placed on recognising and implementing best practice.

Content

Students will be introduced to the principles of archive management in relation to the storage and preservation of archives, to the delivery of a public service and issues surrounding access. The processing of archival collections will also be dealt with from acquisition and appraisal, to sorting, arrangement and the preparation of finding aids.
