Learning Outcomes

As outcomes of this module, students wil have acquired a knowledge of the contrasting conventions of French Classical and Romantic theatre, be acquainted with key dramatists in these periods, and be more deeply aware, through close study of the texts of some of the finest creative minds in the field of drama, of the resources - and limitations - of language.

Brief description

The three plays studied on this course serve as examples through which to trace the evolution of theatre in France from Classicism to Romanticism. The influences which shaped French theatre over the centuries are outlined - social and political circumstances and changes, cultural and religious influences - and the plays themselves together with the conventions that shaped them are examined in detail. Lectures will deal with generalities, while themes, roles and salient scenes and episodes will be treated in seminars.
