Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
Analyse contemporary practice in performance technology and its application in relation to collaborative practice in a range of scenographic and theatrical contexts;
Develop and apply the appropriate technologies and technical skills in the context of contemporary performance
Understand the specific and relevant management systems & structures, equipment, processes of exploration, technologies, equipment and software aimed at achieving the realisation of creative perfromance and scenographic aims;
Create both the documentation which records the associated creative decision-making process and that which manages the process of and cueing of live perfromance
Develop critical and self-critical skills in respect of the management and technical decision-making processes;
Meet the technological and creative encounters that they will experience in the practical explorations of their third year
Brief description
2. It will encourage students not only to recognise, develop and apply the appropriate technologies and technical skills in the context of contemporary performance but also to develop a clear understanding of technology as a tool for the creative process rather than as an end in itself
3. It will introduce students to specific and relevant management systems and structures, equipment, processes of exploration, technologies, equipment and software aimed at achieving the realisation of creative performance and sceongraphic aims
4. It will introduce students to the creation of documentation recording the creative decision-making process as well as the more practical accounting, recording and cueing of live performance
5. It will introduce students to the notion of reflective evaluation of processes, encouraging them to develop critical and self-critical skills in respect of the management and technical decision-making processes employed and to create a sense of responsibility for and ownership of the theatrical event
6. It will, through a series of technical workshops, lecture/workshops, seminars and tutorials challenge their preconceptions about the nature and function of theatre technology, as well as deliver relevant contemporary technological performance knowledge, skills and experience
7. It will prepare them for the technological and creative encounters that they will experience in the practical explorations of their third year
Content
Seminar/Workshops (5 x 2 hrs)
1. The Contexts: Sustaining collaborative practice
2. Lighting: Functions, principles, systems (hard and soft), structure, equipment, processes, documentation
3. Sound: Function, principles, systems (hard and soft), structure, equipment, processes, documenation
4. Stage Management: Function, systems, processes, documentation
5. Production Management: Function, systems, processes, documentation
Workshops (5 x 2 hrs)
1. Lighting 1: Practical workshop on lighting plans, scale, representation and documentation
2. Lighting 2: Practical workshop on location, rigging and focusing, lighting control systems, performance plotting and replay
3. Sound 1: Practical workshop on digital sound recording, live studio and sound effects
4. Sound 2: Practical workshop on digital multi-track editing and processing, digital performance plotting and replay
5. Stage Management 1: Practical workshop on processes and systems
