So why choose the Department of English & Creative Writing?

At Aber (as the locals say), you will be living in a cosmopolitan, bilingual university town, between the rolling Cambrian Mountains and the stunning coastline of Cardigan Bay. You’ll be part of a campus university with its own sports centre, a busy Arts Centre, and you’ll be next door to the National Library of Wales, one of only five copyright libraries in the UK.

The Department of English & Creative Writing at Aberystwyth University is home to a vibrant community of researchers, teachers and students. We are committed to nurturing our students’ critical thinking and creativity and our degrees deliver life-long skills that will lead you into the world of work and beyond. Our curriculum has been carefully designed to allow you to progress from initial encounters with literary texts and early attempts at composition to becoming skilful attenuated readers, researchers and writers with the confidence to work across a broad range of genres and in various modes.

Combining the very best elements of traditional literary studies with exciting and innovative approaches to our subjects, we offer our students the opportunity to explore the texts and authors that fire their imaginations, to experiment with form in their own writing and to develop skills that are valued in the workplace. As a student you will have access to the support you need to learn, develop and excel in your chosen subjects; we take pride in providing excellent, personalised, academic and pastoral support for all of our students.

In the 2017 National Student Survey, our department was ranked in the top 10 in the UK for English, scoring an outstanding 97% overall satisfaction, compared to a UK average of 84%, and in the top 4 in the UK for Creative Writing. This demonstrates that our students recognise the excellent quality of our teaching, and how much they value the exceptional learning environment and cultural experiences they encounter during their time in Aber; memories that they will treasure forever.

The Department of English & Creative Writing is part of the Institute of Arts and Humanities (IAH) and our students, therefore, benefit from belonging to a culturally rich, interdisciplinary environment that is home to specialists in Education, Modern Languages, Fine Art and Art History, Welsh and Celtic Studies, and Theatre, Film and Television Studies.‌

Our exciting degree schemes are not only highly regarded by our students but also by their future employers. A degree in one of our subjects is widely regarded as the “gold standard” for any employment setting where communication is valued. All of our degrees deliver key skills that enable you to build a comprehensive C.V. that evidences your diverse range of competencies, your excellent communication skills, and your ability to engage in critical thinking. Indeed, just this year an incredible 95.4% of our graduates were in employment or further study 6 months after graduation (DLHE, 2017).  Our unique initiatives and employability-focused approach allow for a smooth transition from campus to career and, as a result, our recent graduates have been successful in a broad and dynamic range of career destinations:

Broadcasting; Journalism; Advertising; Publishing; Education; Civil Service; Business; Finance; Health; Administration; Digital Media.
