Children' Collection

The Children's Collection is located on the lower floor of the Thomas Parry Library.

Children's librarianship has always been a popular option in the Department of Information Studies; and the collection has been developed to support this teaching, most of which takes place in the library itself. Students are able to have seminars in the adjacent seminar room and to use material from the collection during them.

The collection is classified by an abridged version of Dewey Decimal, and all the material within it can be traced using the Voyager OPAC. Material in this collection has the classmark prefix CHI.

Because it is essentially a teaching collection quite a lot of the material is either not available for loan or available only on a restricted basis. In general, fiction is available for borrowing, non-fiction is not. However, a few fiction books used in teaching are marked with a blue spot, indicating that they can be borrowed for three days only.

To tell if it is classed as fiction or non-fiction you need to look at the label on the spine.

  • Fiction = a spine label with just letters e.g. CHI F ROB
  • Non-fiction = a spine label with numbers and letters e.g. CHI 345.12 SPO
