Student Network

All University Halls of Residence have an Internet connection via a wired Ethernet network socket in every study bedroom, and increasingly via Wifi.  The wireless network (eduroam) is available throughout all University administrative and teaching buildings; Cwrt Mawr, Rosser, Trefloyne, Pentre Jane Morgan, Plynlimon, Caerleon, Carpenter, Ty Gwerin, Ceredigion, Glyndwr Halls of Residence; the Student Union building and the Arts Centre. Access to the Student Network is is available to registered users at Aberystwyth University.

Your use of the network

In using the network you are bound by the Information Services Regulations and Guidelines and the JANET Acceptable Use Policy. You should familiarise yourself with what these contain. Network Access is provided in support of the academic aims of the University. While a limited amount of non-academic use is permitted as a privilege to our users, this has to comply with our guidelines on Non-Academic computer use by students.

To ensure all users enjoy the best service, whatever the demands on the network, we operate a fair usage policy. This allows users to download up to a quota limit from external websites during a rolling time period. If you exceed the limit within the specified time period your access to external sites will continue to work, but at a considerably slower speed. This policy does NOT include or affect access to Aberystwyth University webpages. Further information and current quota limits can be found in our Fair Usage Guidelines. Quota limits may change at short notice

It is essential when connecting your computer to the University Network that you ensure it is secure from virus attacks, spyware, hacking and unauthorised access from other users. You should read and follow our advice on keeping your computer secure

The Student Network has its own firewall, which works on a default deny basis. However students are able to open ports in the firewall if required to enable programs or applications to run. Details on how this firewall works and how to open ports can be found in our FAQ pages.

Once connected to the Halls Network you will be able to access your University filestore, the Public printers and electronic information resources from your room in halls.
