This module introduces students to contemporary Italian, developing all four skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing,
A wide range of activities are undertaken, such as practical language exercises, work into and out of Italian and vocabulary-building activities. This will be delivered by commercially produced and in-house language materials from a variety of sources.
Students who successfully complete the module should feel that they have a good introductory command of Italian, and should be able to proceed to Beginners 3 or equivalent.

Content

The module will continue to encourage their curiosity about the Italian language, the country, the people, their environment, society, traditions and culture. It will enable the student to reach a level of elementary competence in the four main areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing.
The student will acquire basic language skills, to enable students to:
1. talk about the near future
2. buy and describe clothes
3. discuss likes and dislikes
4. go to a restaurant and order
5. go to a bar and order
6. talk about routine daily activities
7. deal with hotel accommodation
8. discuss hobbies and everyday activities
9. go shopping
10. go to the doctor and talk about problems

The students will cover the following grammar:
 Revision of the aspects of grammar from Italian Beginners 1
with the introduction of the following grammar points:

 Present tense of irregular verbs such as : dare, fare, stare, dire
 Verbs in -ire which insert isc such as preferire
 Reflexive verbs
 Imperfect tense (describing where they used to live)
 Future tense (saying when they will arrive etc)
 The Conditional tense.

Aims

This module will prepare students for further study of the Italian language, literature and culture. The module will enable students to continue reading, speaking, writing and listening to the Italian language, in a variety of contexts.
This module is part of a suite of modules which if successfully completed will lead to a Certificate in Higher Education in Modern Languages.
