Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

  • Students will have attained the first level of the CILS (Certificate of Italian as a Foreign Language) issued by the University of Foreign Students at Siena -Italy- (the Department acts already as a centre for this examination)
  • Students will have covered chapters 1-12 of the course book 'Uno' Cambridge University Press
  • they will have developed the four main language skills - listening, speaking, reading, writing - and an essential metalinguistic knowledge in the target language and in English
  • acquisition of VdB (Vocabolario di Base dell'Italiano) and the required structures to cope with the most common communicative situations in everyday life and a basic grasp of Italian linguistic structures
  • they will be capable of using written Italian at an elementary level, although with considerable reliance on dictionaries

Brief description

With this course we intend to intoduce you to Italian - a language not often offered by British schools. You will have the opportunity to enhance your CV, diversify your university opportunities (Socrates/Erasmus exchanges) and broaden your employment prospects.

In this module you will progress through chapters 1-12 of the textbook Uno (Cambridge University Press) acquiring the structures required to cope with the most common communicative situations in everyday life, and a basic grasp of Italian linguistic structures. At the end, if you wish, you will be able to sit the test for the 1st level of the CILS (Certificate of Italian as a Foreign Language) issued by the University for Foreign Students at Siena, Italy (the Department acts aready as a centre for this examination).
