Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:

1. Impart an understanding of equine structure and its effect on movement.

2. Understand and describe how the horse perceives its environment and the limitations this presents

3. Understand the structure and function of the equine head

4. Understand how and why the horse has evolved the characteristics of today's modern equid.

Brief description

This module is the foundation block for later studies into equine exercise physiology, focussing on equine gross anatomy, skeletal and muscular function and sensory perception of the horse.

Aims

This course is designed to:

investigate the gross anatomy of the horse both in terms of morphology and function;
investigate the functions of all the major body organs, including the superficial and deep muscle blocks, skeletal structures and functions, the foot, the cardio-vascular system, the respiratory system, and the auditory and visual systems;
recognise and identify the major anatomical structures and systems within the horse;
relate and understand the function of the major anatomical structures and systems within the horse.
