  • describe how to acquire and make available music materials in a variety of formats;
  • describe the major music reference sources, printed and electronic, and their use;
  • discuss the problems of arranging, displaying, storing and conserving music materials;
  • describe the copyright and other legal issues affecting the music library;
  • outline the financial aspects of music librarianship;
  • discuss the problems of maintaining professional awareness and involvement with specialist colleagues

Brief description

This module is a continuation of An Introduction to Music Librarianship. It examines the problems of making music materials available in libraries. It considers the particular needs of music users. It describes the skills needed to deal adequately with music materials and the information retrieval problems music can present.
It is aimed at those seeking a career in music librarianship. It examines in greater detail the problems of music librarianship and seeks to provide the specific skills needed to deal with them. It looks at the legal and financial aspects of music librarianship and at issues of professional development.
