Academic rationale of the proposal: There is increasing competition for high-quality job and training opportunities for students at all levels of study. Masters level students require clear evidence of their ability to develop and utilize transferable skills alongside their academic ability and subject-specific knowledge. This module develops skills such as self-reflection, action planning and reviewing which will increase students’ autonomy as they progress through their degree and will be required in workplace settings post-graduation. The aims of this module are therefore to increase postgraduate students’ awareness of the need for critical analysis and self-reflection and to provide opportunities to develop such skills.

Brief description

The work experience module is designed to allow students to use 100 hours of paid or voluntary work alongside selected training courses as an opportunity for self-development and to improve employment prospects. The module begins with students conducting critical analyses of their strengths and weakness and identifying a coherent CPD plan for the academic year. Students will submit this for feedback and assessment in the form of a portfolio, alongside a current CV and information regarding possible work experiences. Following their placement and identified training opportunities, a second portfolio is completed containing guided reflections, an updated skills assessment, and continuing career plan. The work experience can be in any exercise and health employment and can take place during term time (around lectures) or during vacations. The module is fully supported by on-line resources to allow contact and guidance to be maintained whenever and wherever the placement occurs, alongside individual tutorials with module staff.
