On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
Describe ocean bathymetry and the relationship between ocean basins and tectonics.
Describe various sedimentology and marine sedimentary environments, and have the ability to interpret sedimentary sequences in terms of their marine sedimentary depositional environment.
Evaluate the basic sources and sinks of chemicals into the marine environments.
Critically analyse contemporary issues in oceanography for example over-fishing and pollution.
Brief Description: This course will review ocean circulation, ocean basin bathymetry, tectonics and marine geochemistry, but will have an emphasis and shallow and deep water marine sedimentology
Weeks 1-4: Principles: bathymetry; ocean basins and tectonics; ocean water circulation; tides; waves; marine geochemistry 1: aqueous geochemistry; principles of sedimentology, erosion, transport, deposition, diagenesis.
Weeks 5-8: Shallow marine sedimentation; deep marine sedimentation.
Week 9: Marine geochemistry 2: sediment/water interaction, early diagenesis.
Week 10: Acretionary prisms
In addition there will be two practicals on marine sedimentary rocks and two student conferences: contemporary issues in oceanography (week 4) and sedimentary depositional environments (week 8). These conferences will be run as evening sessions.
