Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

Apply knowledge and understanding of the inter-disciplinary combination of biomechanics and psychology to solve a physical activity or sport performance problem

Demonstrate advanced level knowledge and understanding of theories and principles that underpin the study of physical activity and sport performance

Assess, evaluate, and prescribe an intervention to meet a client’s need in a sport or exercise setting to enhance health or performance.

Communicate information in both written and oral formats to both specialist and non-specialist audiences.

Brief description

Designing a good intervention to improve a person’s (sporting) performance, or physical activity level relies on a multidisciplinary approach that is evidence based.

Multidisciplinary collaboration is important in the sport, exercise and health sciences; this is increasingly true of scientific research and especially true of the various applications of these branches of science, e.g., physical education, scientific athlete support, physiotherapy, cardiac rehabilitation, etc.

Furthermore, using evidence-based approaches is important to appreciate, in order to ensure that any interventions are most likely to be effective. A randomized control trial design provides the highest quality scientific evidence to determine the effectiveness of an intervention. Thus this module includes how to design a randomized control trial.

Indicative content includes:
• Explain the nature of multi-disciplinary approaches to the study of sport and exercise science
• Examine topics from physiology, biomechanics and psychology perspectives and apply them
• Behaviour Change theories
• Implementation Science
• Mixed-methods designs incorporating qualitative and quantitive approaches
• Developing the intervention : the randomized control trial
• Reflect on ethics and risk in the practice of a sport and exercise scientist as well as own individual performance and need for future improvement
