Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

Identify sources of greenhouse gas emissions from a range of agricultural systems

Demonstrate an understanding of tools used to support carbon footprinting

Brief description

This module is focussed on Carbon Footprinting in agricultural systems. We will start by exploring the impacts of agricultural systems, in relation to both carbon and nitrogen cycles and examining sources of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from agricultural systems. We will assess the use of the 100 year Global Warming Potential as a measure of GHG emissions and explore how the nature and limitations of LCA studies might affect policies on specific agricultural systems. We will then consider the mathematical models used to support carbon footprinting, the options for mitigating greenhouse gas emissions, and the complexities of assessing their efficacy and impacts. Finally we will evaluate a selection of carbon footprinting models

Content

Through a series of online lectures, guided reading and quizzes, students will explore:

Carbon Foot-printing – The Impacts of Agricultural Systems-
• Describe the carbon and nitrogen cycle and apply your knowledge to discuss the sources of greenhouse gas emissions on an agricultural system of your choice
• Critically assess the use of the 100 year Global Warming Potential as a measure of greenhouse gas emissions impacts
• Discuss how the nature and limitations of LCA studies might affect policies on specific agricultural systems.

Carbon Foot-printing – Evaluating the Tools
• Describe what mathematical models are and how they are used to support carbon footprinting tools
• Discuss the options for mitigating greenhouse gas emissions from agricultural systems and the complexities of assessing their efficacy and impacts
• Assess the current challenges to modelling greenhouse gas emissions from agricultural systems
• Evaluate carbon footprinting tools

Learning will be tested with formative quizzes and by a summative masters level quiz at the end of the module

Module Skills

Skills Type Skills details
Creative Problem Solving The MCQ exam will pose questions that present theoretical problems for the students to solve.
Critical and analytical thinking Students will be expected to synthesise complex information
Digital capability Students will be required to examine and synthesize quantitative data from a range of publications and databases to develop answers for their MCQ exam
Real world sense This module will provide the students with insight into the challenges of carbon footprinting in agricultural systems; they will be assessed on their understanding of this information.
