Music Bursaries

£500 pa

Aberystwyth is a prominent musical centre with a long and distinguished history.  The close-knit character of Aberystwyth strengthens its musical life.  Generations of students have discovered the special quality of music at Aberystwyth.  It's a good place to study.  It's a good place to live.  It's a very special place for music.

Music Bursaries are intended for experienced players of orchestral instruments who can actively contribute to the University's orchestras, bands and other ensembles.

They are awarded on the basis of competitive audition to new entrants in any discipline (undergraduate or postgraduate) and held for the duration of the course.  Bursaries are open to those who apply to Aberystwyth by the closing date, which is 30th June in the year in which entry is proposed and subsequently place Aberystwyth as their Firm choice of University (for undergraduate applicants - although the Bursary can be deferred for one year if required).  You need not apply for the Entrance Scholarship examinations in order to be considered for a Music Bursary but details are given below for your information.

Benefits of Music Bursaries include:

  • £500 a year
  • Free membership of all Music Centre ensembles or affiliated ensembles (including orchestras, bands etc.)
  • Free use of Music Centre practice, library and other appropriaet facilities
  • Guaranteed accommodation in a Hall of Residence or University managed property for the duration of the course (in order to secure your guaranteed place in Residence, you must apply for accomodation for the following academic year within dates advertised by the Accommodation Office for returning students).

The music bursary means that I receive £400 for each of my three years of study. It has been a great help to me, allowing me to purchase extra material for my course whilst also being able to purchase extra musical repertoire and accessories to broaden my musical knowledge. I went to Aberystwyth for an audition where I had to prepare some pieces of music and then perform in front of a music board. I didn’t think I would get it! I am very grateful and pleased that I did. I think the music bursary is a great way to integrate and socialise with the local town community and to take part in the extra curricular and musical activities.
