German sociolinguistics, especially processes of standardisation and attitudes towards non-standard varieties of German.

The history and current status of ‘bad language' as a concept in German folk linguistics.

Member of committee of International Association for Germanic Studies, is on the advisory board of the Journal of Germanic Linguistics and has been appointed a member of the Peer Review College of the AHRC.
