Daniel Rowland Jones

Curator of Collections 1924–1934

Daniel Rowland Jones (1875–1934) was the art master at Ardwyn Grammar School and a brush-work and clay-modelling instructor at summer schools in Aberystwyth from around 1909. With the emergence of the sub-Department of Art and Crafts within the Department of Education around 1917, he was appointed full-time Drawing Master.

Jones took responsibility for the formation of a Welsh Folk Craft collection, and became Curator of the University Museum in 1924. In July 1933 the University Council agreed that the Department of Art and Crafts and its staff should become independent of the Department of Education, and Dan Jones was recognised as Head of the Department. However, he died suddenly in the Autumn of 1934.
