CSM0910 (1995-96 session)
Introduction to Individual Research
Brief Description
This module addresses topics relevant to academic and
industrial R&D. It is a prerequisite for the major M.Sc.
project,
CSM9060
. Topics include project identification,
literature survey, elements of systems engineering, feasibility
analyis, systems analysis and specification of requirements as
applied to R&D projects, and organisation and management of
individual and collaborative R&D. The course consists of a small
number of lectures, and a larger number of seminars typically
presented by pairs of students who relate current course topics
with their indididual projects. Each student chooses a project
with the agreement of individual project supervisors and the
CSM0910 co-ordinator, who maintains a list of suggested projects.
Projects are normally chosen from this list but we welcome
students' own suggestions, especially those related to their
intended careers.

Aims
The aims of this module are to familiarise students with the
fundamental techniques of R&D project organisation and execution,
and to bring together the practical skills and theoretical
understanding that they have acquired, by completing the
feasibility and analysis stages of a substantial individual
project. This module is a prerequisite for
CSM9060
, the major
M.Sc. project. Students completing a University Diploma in
Computer Science will have learned the essential skills required
for organising and establishing projects aimed at the development
of novel software products. In particular, students will develop
skills in
-
project organisation;
-
literature searching;
-
systems engineering;
-
feasibility study;
-
requirements analysis and specification for novel
developments
Objectives
On successful completion of this module, students should be
able to
-
organise software development projects whose purpose is
to create novel products;
-
identify, obtain and document relevant background
material from both academic and commercial sources;
-
analyse the impact of novel software products on existing
human activity systems;
-
carry out a feasibility study;
-
analyse and specify requirements for novel software
products;
Syllabus

Human activity systems; the impact of new computer systems
on human activity systems; identifying the benefits of new
software systems; documenting and avoiding potential problems
-
