How we process your application
The Postgraduate Admissions team will pass your application to the appropriate academic department(s) for consideration. You can expect a decision usually within 2 weeks for Taught Masters courses and 6 weeks for PhD or Research programmes. After this time you will receive an offer letter stating whether:
- You have been successful and are to be offered a place
- You have been invited to an interview
- We are unable to offer you a place
Your offer letter outlines:- The conditions you need to meet before you can register
- The cost of your course
- The start date for your course
When you have fulfilled the conditions of your offer you will receive:- A letter firmly accepting you to Aberystwyth University
- Information about how to pay tuition fees, how to register
- Instructions on how to apply for University accommodation
- Travel and arrival information, and an induction schedule for new postgraduates
-
Accepting, declining, deferring your offer
Please respond to your offer within 6 weeks or the respond-by day noted in the offer. Do not worry if you cannot meet the conditions in your offer by this date, at this stage we simply need to know if you intend to take up your place.
You may request to defer until a later date (one or two years depending on the department), if for personal reasons you are unable to take up your place or are unable to meet the conditions of your offer by the registration date. -
Non-EEA applicants
When all the conditions of the offer have been met, non-EEA applicants applying for full-time programmes will be issued a Confirmation of Acceptance of Studies (CAS) number you can use to obtain a student visa to enter the United Kingdom. See the UKBA website for information.
It is your responsibility to apply for your student visa at the relevant British Embassy or High Commission.
-
Waiting for Funding Confirmation
Often, postgraduate students will have received an offer but may not have received confirmation about their funding application.
Deadlines for funding applications are variable and different to the application process deadlines and you can expect to hear about your offer of a place before you hear about whether you have received funding. Please contact the Postgraduate Admissions Office if you need further clarification about what this means for you. -
International Student Deposit
With the introduction of the Points Based System (PBS) for student visas, AU will now adopt a deposit system in place of financial status checks. This is already widespread practice amongst universities in the UK and will augment the checks carried out by the UK’s Entry Clearance Officers (ECOs) rather than duplicate them.
Payment of a deposit may strengthen an applicant’s case for obtaining a student visa and in some cases are required before they may be able to secure a student loan.
All non-EU Applicants are required to pay a £2,000 deposit in order to become fully accepted on to an Aberystwyth University Postgraduate course.
Applicants who provide evidence that they have full scholarships (i.e. entire cost of tuition fees plus living costs) and AU-graduates will be exempt.
The deposits are non-refundable unless original evidence is provided of the ECOs decision to refuse the visa. However, if refusal is the result of misleading or inaccurate information as part of the visa application, the deposit will be withheld and the offer of a place of study withdrawn.
Deposits on tuition fees may be deferred along with the place of study up to a maximum of two years from the initial start date.
Applicants may pay the deposit directly to AU by:
-
Cheque or Banker’s draft: made payable to “Aberystwyth University” and ensure that your application/personal id number (10-digits) and “Deposit” are noted on the back of the cheque/banker’s draft. These are to be sent directly to the Postgraduate Admissions Office.
-
Bank transfer: please quote your application / personal id number (10-digits) along with the following: Name of Bank: HSBC Bank plc, 19 Great Darkgate Street, Aberystwyth. SY23 1DH. Wales. UK. Bank Sort Code: 40-08-09 Account Number: 21616110 Name of Account: Aberystwyth University Student Deposits Account IBAN Code: GB96MIDL 40080921616110 SWIFT BIC: MIDL GB 21 15W
-
Alternatively, deposits in the form of banker’s drafts made payable to Aberystwyth University may be held by an AU Contracted Educational Agent (CEA). These are to be scanned and e-mailed to the Postgraduate Admissions Office.
Once the applicant has registered with the University and officially becomes an AU student, Income Services will reconcile the deposit with the student’s deposit with their tuition fee payment schedule.
Refunds can only be paid to the source of the initial payment for the deposit.
For courses lasting more than one academic year, please note that fees change annually.
See www.aber.ac.uk/en/postgrad/funding-fees/ for up to date information. -
