The Annual Fund and General Report 2010/11

Student Finance Advisor

Good financial management skills can have a major effect on a student’s life.  The recession is hitting current students the hardest - as their funds and grants strain to cover escalating living costs, debts are more easily incurred.  For some, this can mean years of unnecessary financial hardship.

The Annual Fund wants to offer greater support by funding a part-time Student Finance Advisor (otherwise known as a Money Doctor).  The Money Doctor will counsel and assist students with unexpected or particular financial problems, teaching them vital money management skills and helping them access other sources of funding.   We know this is often more useful than just providing financial support.

Alumni Mentoring Network

The many and varied careers of our graduates show that our students have the capacity to contribute, nationally and internationally, to many areas of life.  In an increasingly competitive employment market with graduate unemployment rates rising 25% in the past year alone, it is now more important than ever that our students are well prepared with an exceptional breadth of work and career experiences.  We are asking for your financial support to establish an Alumni Mentoring Network.  Your gift will provide a strong framework for this online and phone-based mentoring programme. It will support one-to-one mentoring between alumni and current students, work experience placements, counselling, internships, interactive employability events, online career profiling, and provide guidance and support material.

Digitization Project.

Accessible academic resources encourage creative and innovative research. The Annual Fund is seeking to widen access to some of Aber’s most impressive resources by digitizing selected items from the University’s Special Collections.

The University is fortunate to have received bequests of many of unique and rare items.  Access to these special collections is restricted due to their value and fragility, with many being held in humidity controlled locations.  Digitizing these items – placing high resolution images of them online - would make them significantly more accessible to students, academics and the wider public.

It is hoped that the success of this Annual Fund venture will be the foundation for a more comprehensive digitization programme at Aber in the future.

PhD Studentship

The School of Management and Business at Aberystwyth was described as ‘world-leading’ in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) in 2008.  The School is committed to producing research and publications which have international relevance, and to offering ‘business, management and finance solutions that can be applied across sectors, cultures and discipline areas’.  To ensure Aberystwyth maintains this excellent reputation we need to offer more scholarships to attract the best postgraduate students.  The Annual Fund is aiming to finance a three-year PhD Studentship at the School of Management and Business, to cover tuition and maintenance costs.

The PhD will be in the area of international management, particularly the intersection of international relations and business. This is a fantastic opportunity to study the contemporary global political economy, under the supervision of world-class academics.
