4th Davies Forum - 2012 U.S. Presidential Election

The 4th Davies Forum took place on 6 November in the Main Hall of the International Politics Building. The topic was the 2012 U.S. Presidential Election. The participants were Aidan Condron, Professor Campbell Craig, and Dr Andrew Priest. The question they answered was: 'What are the implications of the election for U.S. politics and the world?' About 50 people attended this popular event.

 

Christoph Ploss - "Lord Davies, The New Commonwealth Society and its German section"

03 November 2012

Christoph Ploss, a visiting PhD student from the University of Hamburg, Germany, delivered a special lecture on Lord Davies and the New Commonwealth Society. The lecture was entitled "Lord Davies, The New Commonwealth Society and its German section." Ploss delivered his lecture in IBERS new building in Room 0.32. The event took place on 7 November.

 

2012 DDMI Annual Lecture – Professor Norman Davies on ‘Is the European Union a Vanishing Kingdom?’

The DDMI was delighted to host Professor Norman Davies of Cambridge University as its 2012 Annual Lecturer. Professor Davies was the latest in a long line of distinguished lecturers since the series began in 1954. Professor Davies’ lecture was entitled ‘Is the European Union a Vanishing Kingdom?’ This was a public lecture. All were welcome.

 

IPRG Workshop - ‘Can we trust anybody in international politics?’

The DDMI’s International Politics Research Group was pleased to host the workshop entitled: ‘Can we trust anybody in international politics?’ The workshop, on 24 October 2012, examined the concept of trust in international politics and applied it to three important cases in today's world.

 

Casper Sylvest seminar on "John Herz and International Relations"

The Group on International Theory (GRIT), in collaboration with the DDMI's International Politics Research Group, was pleased to host Professor Casper Sylvest, of the University of Southern Denmark, at the Department of International Politics. Sylvest gave a seminar on "John Herz and International Relations." The seminar took place on Wednesday, 2 May in the Main Hall of the International Politics Building.

 

Prof. Chris Brown - "The Poverty of Grand Theory"

The David Davies Memorial Institute was pleased to welcome Professor Chris Brown of LSE to the Department of International Politics. Professor Brown, an IR theorist of international repute, presented a new paper entitled "The Poverty of Grand Theory" in the Main Hall of the International Politics Building on Friday 23 March.

 

Dr Ian Robinson on food and water security

Dr Ian Robinson gave the third talk in the DDMI's scholar / practitioner speaker series on Monday 12 March in the Main Hall of the International Politics Building. His talk was entitled “Grassroots perspectives on food and water security in Africa and Asia: the experiences of an agricultural adviser.”

 

IPRG presents 3rd Davies Forum: Drs Jan Ruzicka, Ayla Gol, Grant Dawson on Libya and Syria

The International Politics Research Group hosted the 3rd Davies Forum on Thursday the 2nd of February 2012 in the Main Hall of the International Politics Building. The speakers – Drs Jan Ruzicka, Ayla Gol and Grant Dawson – discussed the question ‘The international community’s response to the Libya and Syria crises – what can we learn?’

 

Joint guest talk by Greg Quinn / Paul Bentall of FCO: ‘The UNSC in 2011’ and ‘Outlook for UNSC in 2012'

The International Politics Research Group hosted a joint guest talk by Greg Quinn and Paul Bentall of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. Bentall presented on ‘The UNSC in 2011’ and then Quinn followed with ‘Outlook for the UNSC in 2012’. They were quite interactive and enjoyed spending time answering questions. The event was held in the West Room, International Politics Building, on Monday 30 January 2012.
