Your Guide to University Open Days

As there’s so much to see and do on an Open Day, it’s best to plan ahead. By making sure you register, you’ll receive a programme a week or so before the day. You’ll be able to use this to plan the day, and to make the most of it.

Arriving

Once you arrive on campus, you will be directed to the information desks in the Arts Centre foyer. You will see a lot of people in yellow t-shirts, these are the Student Ambassadors and they are there to help you find your way around, and answer all your questions.

Information Desks and the Information Fair, Great Hall

At the information desk you will be given an information pack, including maps of the campus and town, bus timetables, goodies, and useful information on the University. Once you’ve had your pack, we reccommend you to go to the Information Fair in the Great Hall (Arts Centre), where many departments and services have a stall. This is your opportunity to talk to staff, and collect specific information about a range of our services. Don’t forget to find out about our extensive range of bursaries and scholarships.

Talks and Tours

The University has organised a series of useful talks and tours for the day to help you to get a feel for the campus, facilities, departments and the area. These include individual presentations by some of the departments, and more general talks on themes such as admissions, scholarships and bursaries, and student life. Once you know which ones you want to attend, we can help you to know when and where they are to be held, the information is also in the Open Day programme.

Also, throughout the day there will be student-led campus tours. They are run on the hour, every hour from 10am-3pm, and start from the front of the Arts Centre. These can be both informative and entertaining, and it gives you an opportunity to chat to some of the University’s students.

Departments

All departments will be open for the day, and most host demonstrations, tours, mini lectures and talks. These vary from department to department, so be sure to check what is happening in your department of interest – all activities are listed in the Open Day programme. Once you apply to Aberystwyth University you’ll also be invited to attend an applicant Visiting Day in your academic department, which will offer a more in-depth chance to see the department’s facilities.

Facilities and Services

During the day, you’ll also have an opportunity to visit the Student’s Union, accommodation, libraries, Sports Centre, refectories and cafes. In all of these places you will have a chance to speak to staff and students, and find out about the facilities on offer here at Aberystwyth. We consider academic study part of a whole university experience that you will have living in Aberystwyth and the Open Day will provide you with all the opportunities to find out everything about living and studying here.

Free Time

Many people feel it beneficial to visit the refectories and cafes for some lunch, as it gives you an opportunity to taste the great food on offer, whether you’re considering catered accommodation or not. Feel free to visit them.

Also, you may want to consider wandering into town to get a taste of living in Aberystwyth. Set on the beautiful west coast of Wales, Aberystwyth is the ideal place for studying.
