'Etty', a one-woman play performed by Susan Stein

10 February 2015

The audience was gripped by the performance as Etty’s words were used to give a riveting portrayal of Jewish life in occupied Holland. We were invited into Etty’s mind as she questioned both herself and the world-around her in response to the catastrophe in which she was swept up. Comprised only of Etty’s own words, meticulously chosen from amongst her writings, each line seemed carefully crafted to draw us into Etty’s world and her experience of the Holocaust. The performance challenged us to examine our own faith, whether in god, humanity or ourselves as we were shown Etty’s own efforts to wrestle with these questions.

The play was well received by the audience and followed by a discussion with the performer in which we were encouraged to explore issues raised in the play. Questions were asked about Etty’s life beyond that in the play and the reasons for her increasing prominence as a woman’s voice about the Holocaust were discussed.
