Report from the London workshop on the Challenges to Trust-building in Nuclear Worlds published, February 2010

10 June 2010

The project on The Challenges to Trust-building in Nuclear Worlds, led by the DDMI Director Professor Nicholas J. Wheeler, has published its report from a workshop held in the House of Commons in February 2010. The project is supported by the Research Council UK's 'Global Uncertainties' programme 'Security for all in a changing world'.

The meeting brought together a selected group of 35 UK government officials, NGO representatives, and academics from around the world. The participants examined the future of international nuclear arms control and non-proliferation with specific focus on the role and potential for trust-building. This day-long event was divided into four main sessions:

  • Trust and verification
  • The Iranian nuclear stalemate
  • Trust among the nuclear-weapon states
  • The Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty

The sessions consisted of introductory remarks by distinguished academics and/or practitioners, which were then followed by extensive discussion among all participants. The report summarizes the main points raised by the presenters as well as the key topics arising from the discussions. The meeting took place under the Chatham House rule and the views expressed are therefore not attributed.

Following the workshop, Jan Ruzicka and Nicholas Wheeler published an article 'Decisions to Trust' on the maintaining of the nuclear non-proliferation regime in RUSI Journal.
