The 6th Davies Forum took place on 9 December in the Main Hall of the International Politics Building. The speakers were Professor Björn Weiler from the Department of History & Welsh History, and Drs Claudia Hillebrand and Alistair Shepherd and PhD Candidate Robert Kammel from the Department of International Politics. They discussed: 'What will Germany’s new coalition government mean for Germany, Europe, and the world?’

Dr Helen Brocklehurst guest lecture: 'State of play: securities of childhood - insecurities of children'

The DDMI and its International Politics Research Group were pleased to host Dr Helen Brocklehurst of the Department of Politics and International Relations, Swansea University. Brocklehurst is an IR specialist with a strong interest in children and childhood and their relationship to international politics. Her guest lecture took place on 22 November in the Meetings Room of the International Politics Building.

International Relations Theory Today

The DDMI and Department of International Politics hosted one of Interpol’s landmark international conferences. It was a full, lively, and important discussion of the current state of IR theory by a great gathering of IR scholars. The conference began on the 11th of September and ended on the 13th. Ian Sinclair guest lecture: 'The unknown achievements of the 15 February 2003 anti-war march'

19 April 2013

Ian Sinclair, a freelance writer living in London, gave a lecture based on his book, The march that shook Blair: an oral history of 15 February 2003. The march was part of a co-ordinated day of protests across the world against the then-imminent Iraq War. Sinclair spoke in the Main Hall of the International Politics Building on 19 April.

 

E. H. Carr Memorial Lecture, Prof. Peter Vale, ‘If IR lives in the street, what is it doing in the classroom?'

The DDMI was pleased to announce the E. H. Carr Memorial Lecture for 2013. Peter Vale, Professor of Humanities at the University of Johannesburg, and Nelson Mandela Chair of Politics Emeritus at Rhodes University, spoke on ‘If International Relations lives in the street, what is it doing in the classroom?’ The lecture took place on Thursday 14 March in the Old Hall, Old College, Aberystwyth University.

Department of International Politics held an international conference ‘Emancipatory Realism: Ken Booth and the Discipline of International Relations’ on 15–16 March, 2013. The conference examined the contribution of Ken Booth (Director, DDMI) to International Relations Theory and Security Studies.

 

DDMI Annual Lecturer 2013 - Thomas O. Melia, US Department of State

This year’s DDMI Annual Lecture was given by Thomas O. Melia. Melia is a senior official in the United States Department of State. The lecture took place on Tuesday 19 March in the Main Hall of the International Politics Building, Aberystwyth University. The title of Melia's lecture was: ‘Is it realistic to think we can advance democracy and human rights?’

 

Western interventions in Saharan Africa and the Mediterranean region - 5th Davies Forum

The DDMI was pleased to host the 5th Davies Forum on Tuesday 19 February 2013 in the Main Hall of the International Politics Building. The four speakers were Professor Martin Alexander and Drs Jan Ruzicka, Madeline Carr, and Grant Dawson. Each speaker gave a short presentation on different aspects of the topic: ‘Responsibility to Protect and national self-interest in Western interventions in Saharan Africa and the Mediterranean region.’
