Western interventions in Saharan Africa and the Mediterranean region - 5th Davies Forum

12 February 2013

"Al-Qaeda in Mali? Hostage-taking in Algeria? Insecurity in Libya? Assassination in Tunisia? Human rights abuses in Syria? What is to be done?" The DDMI was pleased to host the 5th Davies Forum on Tuesday 19 February 2013 in the Main Hall of the International Politics Building. The four speakers were Professor Martin Alexander and Drs Jan Ruzicka, Madeline Carr, and Grant Dawson. Each speaker gave a short presentation on different aspects of the topic: ‘Responsibility to Protect and national self-interest in Western interventions in Saharan Africa and the Mediterranean region.’ The presentations were followed by a question and answer session involving the audience, and discussion between the presenters. This event was open to all undergraduate and graduate students and staff. It was an interesting debate about one of the most important and timely issues pressing Western policymakers and publics today.
