Reference Collections

Reference

Reference materials include encyclopaedias, dictionaries, directories, indexes, etc. These items are valuable if you wish to locate specific information or when you are starting to search for material on a chosen topic.

Reference material is shelved within subject areas and along with Quick Reference material cannot be taken out of the Library

The "Quick Reference" collection, located on Level F of the Hugh Owen Library, includes: telephone directories, bus and rail timetables, travel guides, Who's Who, Whitakers Almanac, encyclopaedias and a small collection of dictionaries and thesauri. (N.B. The main collection of dictionaries (for all languages) is on Level F). More specific works will be found on their relevant subject floors - Levels E and F. Law reference works are found in the Law Library.

Bibliographies and indexes held within the reference collections will help in the search for books or journal articles when researching a particular subject. Library staff will help you use those relevant to you, and will also introduce you to the large number of electronic indexes and databases available to you from any networked computer.
