Aberystwyth University appoints new Vice-President
Mrs Elizabeth France CBE BScEcon, Hon DSc, Hon DLitt, Hon D Laws, the Telecommunications and Energy Supply Ombudsman and previously the UK's first Information Commissioner, has been appointed a Vice-President of Aberystwyth University.
Mrs France, who studied Political Science at Aberystwyth and is a Fellow of the University, was appointed at a meeting of Aberystwyth University Council on Wednesday 31 October 2007 and takes up office on 1 January 2008.

After graduating in 1971 Mrs France joined the Home Office and served in all the main business areas of the Department, including working with local authorities, the criminal justice system and the private sector. She was also Head of the Home Office's Information and Pay Services Division in Bootle. In 1994 she became the Data Protection Commissioner, becoming the first Information Commissioner in 2001. She is currently the Ombudsman and Chief Executive of TOSL, which runs the Telecommunications, Energy Supply and Surveyors Ombudsman Services. Mrs France is also a Non-Executive Director of the Serious Organised Crime Agency.
Commenting on her new role, Mrs France said: “It is a privilege to have been invited to build on the experience I have gained as a Council Member to take on the role of Vice President.
There are many opportunities on the horizon for the University. We need a strong governance framework to give us the confidence to make the most them, and I look forward to playing my part in providing it.”

Professor Noel Lloyd, Vice-Chancellor of Aberystwyth University has welcomed the appointment: “I am delighted with the appointment of Elizabeth France as Vice-President. Her experience will be invaluable to the University at this exciting time in our development and I look forward to working closely with her.”
With this appointment Mrs France becomes one of two Vice-Presidents at Aberystwyth University, the other being Mr Winston Roddick CB QC LLM.  Sir Emyr Jones Parry, former UK Permanent Representative to the United Nations, takes up the post of University President in January 2008.
