Summary of courses and services

We offer a range of courses and services across the university for enhancing your study experience. Our courses further the development of good academic practices through the use of critical techniques in:

  • academic writing
  • communicating in seminars
  • working with lectures
  • revision and exams
  • information management

Alongside our free courses and individual consultations, we also coordinate a range of credit-bearing undergraduate modules and other specific programmes that you may be involved with via your academic department. We also offer research training in collaboration with the Office of Postgraduate studies.

Writing, communication, information and professional skills courses

Undergraduate (this programme is available in both semesters and is offered in collaboration with Information Services).

10 seminars on academic writing, study skills and information management and online and library based research.

Individual writing consultations with our Royal Literary Fund Writing Specialist

Individual consultations on your academic writing are available with our RLF Writing Specialist, Cynan Jones. Cynan is available for two days per week.

Appointments are free and are confidential. Distance learning and other part time or home based students may be able to arrange appointments by Skype.

Actual days will be subject to change and consultations are offered at the discretion of the Writer. The RLF Writing Fellowship Scheme does not offer a proof reading service or language tuition and each consultation is an advisory session to help with writing and study issues. Consultations are limited to one initial appointment and are not automatically offered on a repeat basis.

Undergraduate modules

  • IC17720: Planning, Process and Product in Academic Writing (20 credits, two semesters)
    Students attend one seminar per week
    One semester options are also available. These operate as separate modules, but are taught together with IC17720
  • IC27720: Advanced Communication in English in an Academic Context (20 credits, one semester, repeated in semester 2)
  • IC20110: Written Communications in Management and Business (10 credits, one semester)
  • IC31120: Written Communications in Management and Business (20 credits, two semesters)
    IC20110 and IC31120 are taught together in semester 1. IC20110 finishes at the end of semester 1 and IC31120 continues in semester 2
    Students attend one seminar per week
