Bringing cultures together

19 May 2016

IEC’s recent end of term party saw students from Georgia, Greece, China, Brazil, Korea, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Sudan, Morocco and Oman sharing songs with refugees from Syria and teachers and friends from the UK. It’s wonderful to see our students getting ready to leave IEC and begin their degrees here at Aberystwyth University, and even more wonderful to see the friendships they’ve formed across cultures while they’ve been in the department.

Sarah Mc Kenna has been doing a great job in bringing IEC students and members of the local community together to help the recently arrived Syrian refugees with their English.

Among the many highlights of the party was a song from Yu Lu and Fan Jiaming, about leaving your home far behind and facing hard times and good times in a new land.  This was followed by the IEC choir giving a fine rendition of the Beatles’ “With a Little Help from my Friends”.

What a great celebration of what students often refer to as the “IEC family”!
