'Legitimacy and Hegemony'

Professor Ian Clark received funding from the ESRC for a three year project ending in 2010 entitled 'Legitimacy and Hegemony'. This was especially concerned with the United States' leading role in the contemporary order, the issues of international legitimacy to which this gives rise, and the means by which they might best be addressed. As part of this Professorial Fellowship, he wrote the third volume of his international legitimacy trilogy, Hegemony in International Society (Oxford, 2011).

In addition to Professor Clark's book, the project comprised an international collaborative dimension. The concepts of international legitimacy and hegemony were explored through a series of five workshops, looking both at regional dynamics and implications for key international organizations (mainly the UN Security Council and proposals for its reform). These core concerns were further developed at symposia and lectures (see below). The outcome of the collaborative dimension of the project is the book Special Responsibilities: Global Problems and American Power (Cambridge University Press, in press), co-authored by Mlada Bukovansky, Ian Clark, Robyn Eckersley, Richard Price, Chris Reus-Smit and Nicholas J Wheeler.
