Employability

Record numbers of Aberystwyth University students entering work or further study.

Figures released in June 2017 by the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) show that 95.4% of our full-time, first degree students were either in work or further study six months after graduating from Aberystwyth University in 2016.

HESA’s Destinations of Leavers in Higher Education 2015-16 survey also showed that 75.6% of our graduates were in professional-level jobs or graduate level further study - a 6% increase on the previous year.

Here are just some of the impressive statistics showing where students from a range of Aberystwyth University departments go after graduating:

  • 100% of UK/ EU Art graduates in employment or further study 6 months after graduation. (HESA 2017)

Our continued commitment from campus to career

These upward trends in graduate employability and the University’s employability ratings reflect our commitment to ensuring our students have the skills they need for the 21st century workplace.

We offer a growing range of four-year courses with an integrated Year in Industry, giving students the chance to spend time working for a company in their chosen field of study. Real-life work experience like this can make a crucial difference when it comes to getting a job.

Another option is our Year in Employment Scheme which for the past 40 years has been offering students the opportunity to do a paid job for 12 months between their second and third year of study – either in the UK or overseas.

If working or studying abroad appeals to you, you’ll be glad to hear that Aberystwyth University is part of the Erasmus+ 2014-2020 scheme.

Mila de Clercq spent a year abroad in France in 2016 as part of her French & Economics degree course and worked as a wine tourism guide in Bordeaux. She went on to land a job with an established wine importer in London and is convinced her Erasmus year abroad made her application stand out.

“After graduating, I started applying for graduate-level jobs in London knowing that it can be very tough to get work in the wine industry unless you have good connections. I believe my year abroad gave me a huge advantage in getting a job as I could draw on my language skills and my experience of living and working France.” – Mila de Clercq

Whatever your chosen career, the University’s Careers Service can help you recognise your strengths and explore a wide range of opportunities so that you make informed decisions about your future.

This support is available throughout your time here as a student and after your graduate – when you could be eligible to apply for one of our sought-after AberForward internships.

Graduates seeking to turn business ideas into reality can access a full programme of enterprise events organised by the Careers Service under the AberPreneurs banner, which includes the popular InvEnterPrize student ideas competition.

And our Institute of Business & Law has a focussed employability module, with local organisations providing real-life work experience for students.

Our wonderful family of alumni across the world are also on hand to offer current students and recent graduates career mentoring and guidance through our eMentoring online platform.
