Epidemiology

Epidemiology is the study of the distribution and determinants of health-related events in human or animal populations. It is wide in scope, including inter alia, diseases, pathogens, diagnostic tests, behaviours and attitudes. It operates at both macroscopic or microscopic scales and is characterised by investigation at the level of population rather than individuals.

We work across a wide range of diseases and many of these investigations include epidemiology, alongside other disciplines.

Projects

• Development of targeted selective treatment strategies (TST) against gastro intestinal nematodes in peri-parturient ewes (Kess 2, Meat Promotion Wales).
• Fluke mapping using eDNA to inform development of sustainable control measures (EIP Wales).
• Quantifying livestock behaviour for disease detection using precision livestock monitoring technologies (Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol).
• Patterns of antimicrobial use in UK agriculture
• Epidemiology of brucellosis in domestic livestock and wildlife
• Epidemiology of rabies in southern Africa

• African Penguins and the Blue Economy: Building a Foundation to Prevent Extinction (MeerWissen African-German Partners for Ocean Knowledge, GIZ).
• HPAI survey of African penguins in Namibia (National Geographic Society (Project Number NGS-61610C-19) and South Africa (Hans Hoheisen Charitable Trust Project Number P/00223).
• Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) surveillance in Namibia: ensuring prosperity, enhancing ecosystem health, protecting poultry (CIDRA).
• Haemoparasites of southern Africa avifauna (MeerWissen African-German Partners for Ocean Knowledge, GIZ).
