Art Practice I and II is divided into Drawing, Painting, Graphics, Photography. Together they form the first year course in Art Practice. Through set projects the student examines the vocabulary and grammar involved in the production of drawn and photographic images. Various techniques and processes are examined including methods and materials, printmaking, illustration and photography.
- provide an experience in all the art disciplines encountered at Level 2, in particular Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, and Painting.
- introduce the fundamental principles of objective drawing through the analysis of form in line, tone, and mark-making
- facilitate an understanding of drawing and painting as visual languages possessing grammar, syntactical components, internal rules, and logic.
- create an ability to select and employ each of these grammars both singly and in conjunction with each other as a means of articulating and expressing form.
- encourage competence and confidence in Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, and Painting.
- develop the understanding of these mediums as a means of recording, and the facility to make an accurate and objective visual record in a variety of different environments and situations.
- cultivate an understanding of the concepts of line, tone, surface, and achromatic colour, and the ability to differentiate them in the practice of drawing and painting.
- nurture the acquisition of a knowledge of the various processes involved in lino-cut, etching, photographing and developing.
- instil a comprehension of the cultural heritage of Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, and Painting, and their continuing importance to contemporary art practice.
- enable students to make an intelligent and personal response within the confines of a prescriptive brief.
- manage time and meet prescribed deadlines.
- develop the ability to receive criticism and engage in self-criticism constructively and dispassionately
