Assessment

Assessment Type Assessment length / details Proportion
Semester Assessment 1. Practical Project:  Produce a factual radio package no longer than 3 duration, to include at least one interview recorded on location and music/sound effects or actuality.  50%
Semester Assessment 2. Group Project:  Produce, as part of a team, a magazine-style radio programme up to 30 duration.  40%
Semester Assessment 3. Critical Analysis:  Individually written self-assessment of the two above assignments (1,000 words)  10%
Supplementary Assessment Assessments 1 & 3 may be re-submitted. Failure of Assessment 2 would necessitate 1 x 1,500 word essay, involving critical assessment of the editorial and technical skills necessary for the successful production of a 30-minute radio programme.  

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

1. Produce a short radio package which shows competence in radio production techniques, including interviewing, recording, scripting and editing.
2. Show an understanding of the key production processes and professional practices relevant to factual radio production, including an awareness of editorial guidelinesand regulations.
3. Work effectively as part of a production team, showing an ability to manage time, personnel and resources.
4. Critically evaluate their own work and that of other students.

Content

This module will be taught across 10 x 2 hour sessions which will consist of a mix of lectures, discussions and practical exercises.

Aims

This module will provide students with a range of basic production skills required in factual radio production, including interviewing, recording, scripting and digital editing. It will also explore the editorial issues and regulatory framework which govern radio in the 21st century. Students will also look at internet radio and podcasting.
